Cargills to take Kandy home

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Cargills (Ceylon) PLC has embarked on a five-year partnership with Kandy Sports Club, the undisputed front-runner among rugby clubs in Sri Lanka. The partnership between these two giants in the respective fields has two aspects. Quite apart from the sponsorship is the social responsibility aspect which has been built into the agreement.

Ranjit Page, the Chief Executive Officer of Cargills said: “Through our relationship with the talented players of Kandy SC, we would strive to build the next generation of players from Kandy”.
Rumaiz Raheem, the Group Manager, spoke of a special relationship between Cargills and Kandy SC that lays emphasis on quality and performance. Speaking of Kandy SC in glowing terms, he felt that it had built a reputation for taking youth and turning them into stars.

The President of Kandy SC, Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte, who is having his eighteenth year at the helm, made the point that there is a genuine commitment on their part to support the development of talent, especially from under-privileged backgrounds. Dr. Kapuwatte mentioned that Kandy SC won its first trophy in 1992. After that, it has been wave upon wave of success, with just the odd break.

He was thankful to Singer Sri Lanka who supported the club in the last 12 years and will continue to do so. The Executive Director Millers Ltd, Delano Dias, Nihal Ratwatte, secretary of Kandy SC, this season’s skipper Saliya Kumara, the committee of Kandy SC and the players all enthused about this new partnership. As is his custom, the Chief Trustee of Kandy SC Malik Samarawickrema took a back seat during the proceedings.
