Thomians succumb as Trinity record eighth win

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Trinity, a very professional outfit, powered to their eighth win of the season when they demolished a disappointingly lack-lustre S. Thomas’ team by an innings and 124 runs at Asgiriya Stadium yesterday. The match ended at 1.40pm.

Off-spinner and opening bowler Janishka Premasinghe continued his wicket-taking ways by grabbing nine wickets for 65 in the match. Dinuk Wickremanayake took the limelight with an attractive, unbeaten 101 – his third hundred for the season. Heshan Wanniarachchi also came well with a knock of 71.

Trinity 314 for 7 wicket (67) (J. Premasinghe 33, N. Dikwella 33, H. Wanniarachchi 71, D. Wickremanayake 101 n.o., L. Dissanayake 31 n.o., T. Sumanasiri 4/75, M. Ravichandrakumar 2/65)
S. Thomas’ 53 all out (29.1) (A. Fernando 2/8, J. Premasinghe 4/18, L. Jayasinghe 2/1) and 137 all out (65.1) (S. de Mel 35, N. Wickremasekara 35 n.o., C. Pathirana 22, D. Jayasinghe 15, J. Premasinghe 5/47, L. Jayasinghe 3/8)

St. Sylvester’s lead
Both Richmond and St. Sylvester’s found run-getting difficult on the opening day of their match at Peradeniya.

Yet the Sylvestrians had taken a narrow lead of 26, thanks to an enterprising knock of 37 by opener Faiz Ahamed.

This was after the Sylvestrian wicket-taking combination of Nimesh Mendis and Sumedha Dissanaike had taken three apiece to contain Richmond to a very modest 94.

Navin Nanayakkara, with the bat, and A.K. Tyronne, with the ball performed best for the Galle school.
Richmond 94 in 27 overs (N. Nanayakkara 26, P. Nissanka 20; N. Mendis 3/18, S.Dissanaike 3/19, W. Wijesinghe 2/26)

St. Sylvester’s 120 for 9 in 67 overs (R. Ahamed 37,H. Madushan 20, R. Ekanayake 17, M. Wijesinghe 20; A.K. Tyronne 4/35, C. Akalanka 2/25)
