President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday hit out at super powers and regional powers which try to preach or lord over others.
Speaking at the celebrations of the UN Day of Vesak in Bangkok, Thailand, but without identifying the countries, he told such conduct was by virtue of their given labels – super power, regional power, economic power, etc. It is by the conduct of these nations that they must be judged and be determined whether they are superior to another, he said.
He paid tribute to the late Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar for his “enormous contribution” to make the day of Vesak a United Nations event. He said terrorists assassinated him in August 2005.
President Rajapaksa also noted that the superiority of one individual or a group of people or a community is not through a particular divine right or by virtue of their birth, but by their actions. The manner in which one group conducts itself will determine whether it is worthy of a higher or lower label, he added. |
