A sinking bridge between Beruwala and Maggona has placed the northern coastal railway link in danger.
People living in the area said that Railway department recently carried out renovations on the train road from Aluthgama to Kalutara where the bridge is situated but did not repair the old bridge.
Four persons have been deployed for 24 hours a day on both sides of the bridge armed with red flags to signal to oncoming trains.
Despite this precaution the trains do not slow down as they pass and this only increases the danger of the bridge collapsing.
As a large number of trains cross the bridge, officials need to take action and renovate the bridge to avoid a potential train accident.
