Well done ladies - hats off to you

The lady members of the Royal Colombo Golf Club richly deserve a 'salute' for a most heart warming gesture, in organizing a 'Ladies/Caddies Golf Tournament' conducted on Pro-Am lines, The RCGC interim Lady Captain Mrs Elizabeth Moir- Tendufla along with her energetic team comprising Jane Hong, Swineetha Selvaratnam and Manori Jayakody among others galvanized support from many Golfing members to contribute towards making the event a success.

The Golf itself was keenly contested with the Caddies partnering the Ladies in a Pro-Am style stable-ford aggregate tournament in which the feature was that Amateur Golfing members 'caddied' for some of the Caddies who played. In this day and age an act of this nature, even though done in fun is a noble act of great human understanding which cannot be sufficiently commended in words. The spirit of fellowship and sportsmanship exemplified, enjoyed and appreciated by a few and saluted as an act to be admired, well done!

Furthermore Lady Captain Elizabeth mobilized a private group of Ex-pat Golfers who sent the 'hat' around and with the generosity of members provided a 'package' of consumer goodies to the Caddies and all staff members in the pavilion of the RCGC who serve without reservation on a daily basis. The day of Golf culminating with members gifting the 'Hamper' of good-will at an off-peak time in the year just to share the love of human kindness was truly a breath of fresh air!

How wonderful it would be if many other organizations can copy this act of fellowship and 'Goodwill' performed by the RCGC Ladies quietly considered an 'elitist' few who ventured to go where others do not even imagine. The game of Golf grants many an opportunity to develop one's character, physical fitness, mind control a healthy constitution, an amazing network and most of all an access to relieve stress.

The other good news from the RCGC Ladies is that a new Committee comprising Jane Hong as Captain supported by former club champion Jackie Dias as Vice Captain and another champion golfer Shanika De Silva coming in as Treasurer, Anusha Senadhira as Secretary along with two Swiss born gorgeous ladies married to two enthusiastic Golfers namely Dani Hameed and Kathy Twerenbald will be sworn in uncontested in the not too distant future.

A Committee with a mixed Global flavour promises much to the RCGC and to the Men's Committee for a vibrant Golfing Year 2012/2013.

Mercedes Benz World Tournament 2012
The Mercedes Benz Sri Lanka qualifier for the Zonal Finals to be played in Gold Coast Australia got underway at the Victoria Golf & Country Resort, with over 80 Golfers facing the starter.
The winners from the different Categories take wing to Stuttgart Germany for the World Finals where Top Professionals too play in a Pro-Am format in the World Final stage of the Mercedes Benz Championship.

On a pleasant but windy day of Golf the Competition was tough and the course played quite long but there were some excellent scores returned in all the divisions. The highest score was an astounding 43 Stableford points by the ever green Fran De Mel to win the Open Ladies category by 3 points from Shyama Perera who scored 40 to be runner-up with the flamboyant Niloo Jayathileke in 3rd place with 35 points. In the Men's C Division Rohitha Silva too recorded 43 points to win his division in a canter from Tyronne Weerakkody and Ifthikar Ahmed who were tied on 34 points. Tyronne was the Runner-up on a count-back on the back nine. The A division for the Handicap Category 0-12 Sarath Piyaratne had a masterly round to secure victory with 40points.Japanes entry Yuki Asakawa with 37 points was the Runner-up, closely followed in third place by the master batsman of 'Lords' fame Sidath Wettimuny on 35 points.

The B division with the stiffest competition in a tight finishes hitherto unknown A. Ghosh won with 41 points from Gihan Wickramasinghe on 40 and a former qualifier to Australia Nimal Perera on 39. The Golf was followed by an entertaining fun filled evening with the amiable Erroll Johnston CEO of Victoria Golf and Country Resort being the 'Compere' for the night livening-up the proceedings and giving the awards away through the gracious hospitality of Mr. and Mrs Pandithage representing the sponsors of this annual event the World Mercedes Benz Golf championship. The month of June is inundated with Tournaments and the Monsoon Meet Tournaments too will get underway shortly at the Royal Colombo Ridgeways.
