Shafie Jainudeen laid to rest in Melbourne

The remains of Shafie Jainudeen, Trinity’s rugby skipper in 1969, was laid to rest in Melbourne, Australia yesterday. He passed away on Friday after a brief illness.

Shafie who was awarded the Trinity Rugby Lion in 1969 played for Trinity for from 1966 to 1969 giving Trinity the all important Brady Shield in 1969. He also turned out for Kandy SC briefly when Denzil Kobbekaduwa captained the side.

Later he turned out for the Havelocks and in a blazing career guided Havelocks to many championship titles including the Clifford Cup. He captained Havelocks in 1975.

Shafie also represented the SLRFU President’s XV against the Australian Emus. He was a shipping executive by profession and was employed at Freudenbergs as a Staff Executive, Lloyd Serendibs and Hayleys.

He was a key member of the Sri Lanka team for Rugby Asiad in 1974 where Sri Lanka finished second to Japan at Longdon Place, the best result so far in Asian competitions. Indrajit Coomaraswamy was the skipper of the Sri Lanka outfit.

Later he took up a post in Dubai, UAE and turned out for the Dubai Exiles in many Gulf rugby competitions, touring many countries in the process. He leaves behind his wife Trudy, daughter Soraya and son Malik. His relatives in Sri Lanka will conduct Janaza Prayers at Jawatte today (Sunday) after ‘Zuhur’ Prayers.
