We have stepped into another great and glorious traditional New Year. New clothes, festive sweets, traditional songs, exciting games, and friendly competitions filled with laughter have shaped the past few weeks. This season has been about reconnecting with family and friends, attending staff gatherings in traditional attire, and embracing the spirit of new beginnings.

A Time for Renewal

While we revel in the joys of the New Year, we must also acknowledge the major shifts happening in the world. Life-altering decisions are being made that will significantly impact us. The passing of Pope Francis, marking the end of an era, will soon lead to the appointment of a new Pope. Likewise, the ongoing tariff wars will shape international economies, while nations deliberate over conflicts - choosing either prolonged battles or peace negotiations. Even in our personal and professional lives, this time of year is often a period of deep reflection and decision-making.

Key Steps in Effective Decision-Making

To navigate these choices wisely, we must first recognise where we stand today and how we arrived here. Are there burdens, biases, or misconceptions - possibly woven into our belief systems without our awareness - that hold us back? The New Year is a time for soul-searching, because often, our greatest obstacle can be ourselves.

Self-realisation is crucial. Understanding our strengths and weaknesses allows us to build on our advantages while addressing gaps in our abilities. Psychometric tests provide insights into our capabilities and guide personal development. This principle also applies to organisations - knowing our competitive edge, understanding why customers choose us, and safeguarding our trade secrets that give us an advantage in the marketplace.

Aligning ourselves with the right people, organisations, and nations is vital for growth, development, and sustainability. Surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals sharpens our perspectives and enables us to make informed choices as ‘iron sharpens iron’.

Understanding the Changing Landscape

We are navigating an era unlike any before. From rapid advancements in artificial intelligence to groundbreaking discoveries, the world is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Old strategies may no longer work. We have a short window to prepare for the changes already appearing on the horizon, ensuring we are ready to adapt and thrive.

Hinge Moments and Decisions

Life presents us with hinge moments - decisions that shape our futures. Whether facing crossroads or crises, applying our education and experience helps us make the right choices at these defining pivotal junctures.

Emotional intelligence plays a key role in decision-making. It is about understanding ourselves so we can interact effectively, manage situations wisely, and lead with compassion. Timeless truths such as ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ and ‘whatever a man sows, he will reap in return’ highlight the importance of emotional awareness in shaping the decisions we make.

The Brevity of Life

Life is fleeting, and when our time comes, we must depart. There are no guarantees about tomorrow. Before we judge or criticise others, let us pause to assess whether it is necessary and whether we have all the facts. Once words are spoken, they cannot be taken back. Everyone has, at some point, been someone else's disappointment, so decisions should not be made in isolation or purely based on emotions and intellect. Instead, we should seek divine wisdom beyond our limited understanding.

As I write this article, I have learned about the passing of a dear childhood friend of ours - Sathi Somasundaram - someone with whom, as friends, we have shared countless memories from early school days. ‘We learnt of books and learnt of men and learnt to play the game’ of life together. His sudden departure is a painful reminder of life’s fragility. While we are here, we must consciously decide how to invest our time in the lives of those we love and, in the individuals, placed along our journey.

Nothing in life is random; everything unfolds according to a divine master plan. We are given one life, and one day, we will account for the choices and decisions we made. So, as we stand among thousands in the valley of decision-making, let us approach our decisions with purpose, divine wisdom, and clarity.
