General Manager of the Bank of Ceylon D.M. Gunasekara resume duties today (Wednesday) after being sent on compulsory leave on April 7 pending an inquiry over certain irregular dealings and decisions. The directive to send him on compulsory leave has been withdrawn following demands made by BOC trade unions. Finance Ministry sources said that the inquiry is continuing into Mr. Gunasekera's alleged involvement in the setting up of a bank branch in the Seychelles without proper permission, making improper recruitment and in releasing of money to Perpetual Treasuries for investment in the controversial treasury bonds issue of the Central Bank. The sources said while the ministry has taken files and documents relating to these matters for the inquiry, so far nothing has transpired to take further disciplinary action against Mr. Gunasekera.
