The Supreme Court on Tuesday postponed till May 13 further hearing in the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition seeking an independent inquiry into the controversial Central Bank Treasury bond issue. The FR petition was filed last month by three good governance activists - Dr. G. Usvattearachchi, Dr. A.C. Visvalingam and Chandra Jayaratne. Lawyers for the Monetary Board headed by Governor Arjuna Mahendran in their submissions said the charges against the Governor were baseless. Mahendran, who was accused of being involved in irregular activities in the bond issue due to his son-in-law's family firm securing 50 per cent of the Rs.10 billion bond issue, was cleared by a committee which said he was not directly involved.
