Catamarans Sports Club, the popular Sports and Social Club in Moratuwa launched their tribute song ‘Spirit of Catamarans’ in the format of a music video on Friday, 7th June, at the Clubhouse in Moratuwa at a grand ceremony, attended by its members and invitees.
‘The Catamarans Sports Club popularly branded as ‘Cats, has ventured on a unique musical idea in early 2024 to produce a tribute music video for ‘Cats’ under the direction of veteran musician Priya Peiris. The results was the launch of ‘Spirit of Catamarans’.
The song ‘Spirit of Catamarans’, reflects the true spirit of the ‘Cats’ and is the very first tribute song dedicated to a sports club in Sri Lanka. Conceptualised and composed by ‘Cats’ member cum veteran musician Priya Peiris of ‘La Bambas’ fame, ‘Spirit of Catamarans’ is portrayed as a tribute to the iconic institution.
The ceremony was conducted by former president Brian Coorey, who welcomed the guests and briefed about the essence and uniqueness of the song, along with the brainchild of the project Priya Peiris.
Priya addressing the gathering said that he concepted this idea in mid-February and completed the production with the blessings of the Club President Mahesha Perera. He added that the inspiration for the composing came from his early years as a member, which he described as, the salad days of the club.
In addition to Priya and Brian, the rest of the performing singers were from the ‘CATS’ fold, comprising prominent members in the local field of music, such as Lincoln De Silva - leader of ‘Super Pink & Purple’, Lasla Fernando – veteran Choirmaster and founder member of ‘La Bambas’, Delvin Pereira – well known singer and Chrysanthus Fernando - former cricketer and fellow ‘Bambaras’ band mate of Brian.
President Mahesha spoke highly about the song and said that the Club was elated with the production and thanked Priya for the innovative effort. Subsequently, patron Mahen Perera and President Mahesha officially launched the ‘Spirit of Catamarans’ and officially unveiled the ‘Cats’ YouTube Channel.
Also associated in the proceedings were Club’s Chief Trustee Rohana Deepal.
‘Special mention is due to the dynamic secretary Roshan Devapura and joint Social Secretaries, Lakshan Perera and Samantha De Mel, who displayed great enthusiasm to ensure a successful launch ceremony’ said Brian Coorey.
