Award winning Australian stand-up comedian Nazeem Hussain will be performing his show Legally Brown at SLECC this Sunday.
Born to Sri Lankan Muslim parents he has come to his tropical motherland to bring his unique wit for the first time. His show heavily focuses on racial prejudices while the material is progressive and pushes boundaries. In Australia he says, “even though its people like to think that they are multicultural, there is a deep undercurrent of racism that does not often gets spoken about. Comedy is a way of having a conversation about these problems in a positive way”
Asked whether he will have any material regarding the racism issues faced in Sri Lanka he states that it would not be his place, as he did not grow up here and does not wish to get whipped with a stingray! He also hopes that the audience can draw parallels form his sketches about Australia.
“As much as Sri Lanka has problems with racial tensions it also likes to celebrate its diversity. For every religious holiday there is a public holiday” Which he goes on to ask out loud, whether Sri Lankans have ever worked a full week.
