Miss South Africa has won the Miss Universe crown for 2017.
Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who recently earned a business management degree, was crowned Sunday during the event that took place at The AXIS theater at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip, Hollywood Reporter said.
The runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez. The second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett.
Ninety-two women from around the world participated in the decades-old competition. This year's edition had the most contestants ever.
This year the the Miss Universe pageant changed things up by selecting the top 16 finalists based on continents. This year's finalists include four from The Americas (North America, Central America, South America, Caribbean), four candidates from Europe, and four candidates from Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Four wildcard contestants will also be part of the competition.
