A woman who pleaded guilty to sheltering an LTTE female suicide bomber in an attempt in 2008 to assassinate the then Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena was sentenced to a two-year-suspended imprisonment by the Colombo High Court yesterday.
The accused Selvakumar Welamani, a mother of five children was sentenced to two-year-imprisonment suspended for ten years by Colombo High Court Judge Piyasena Ranasinghe.
The High Court ordered the accused to pay a fine of Rs.25,000 - an offence under section 2 of Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
The suicide bomber made an abortive attempt on the life of President Maithripala Sirisena when he was serving as Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Minister near Pirivena junction in Boralesgamuwa on October 9, 2008.
While the then Minister escaped in the incident one of the escort vehicles was damaged and three security personnel were injured in the blast and a civilian was killed.
