A total of 150 inmates at the Welikada Prison were transferred to the Boossa and Agunukolapalassa prisons today (Jun 25).
Prisons Commissioner General J.W. Tennakoon said that of the total inmates, 69 are currently serving a death sentence.
The inmates were transferred due to a renovation project which is taking place in the vicinity of the cells used to hold death row inmates, he explained.
However, these inmates would be transferred back to the Welikada Prison within a month, Mr. Tennakoon noted.
He added that special security has been provided to the Boossa and Agunukolapalassa prisons.
