Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywaradane signed the blueprint of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution a short while ago giving legal effect from today onwards, the Parliament announced.
Meanwhile the Committee on Parliamentary Business also began its meeting under the patronage of the Speaker today. Earlier the Bill entitled “Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution” was passed with amendments by the House on October 22. It was presented to Parliament by the Minister of Justice on September 22.
The Second Reading of the Bill was passed by the House after having taken a division (156 in favour; 65 against). Subsequent to the Committee Stage, the Third Reading was passed with a majority of two-thirds after having taken a division ( 156 in favour; 65 against; 0 abstained; 01 absent).
