At least 219 drunken drivers were arrested since a special traffic programme came to effect on April 10, police said.
Police media spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekara said 1200 police traffic officers are deployed in Colombo city area. All other Police stations too launched traffic missions and special traffic plans as required.
During the festival season in last year, 1980 drunk drivers have been arrested. Most of them were motorbike riders. In addition to these traffic missions, extra Police and civil squads are also to be deployed to strengthen the security during the festival season.
He also requested from the public to beware of lighting crackers and swimming in reservoirs during this season.
