About 40,000 kgs of rotten imported potatoes were seised from a storage facility close to the Dambulla Economic Centre.
Health officers attached to the Dambulla Municipal Council raided a privately-owned storage facility following a tip received by the Mayor Jaliya Opatha.
At the time of the raid, several women were seen cleaning sprouts from the rotten potatoes, while some were mixing slightly rotten ones with good potatoes to be released to the market.
The potatoes imported from India, have been brought to the storage facility in containers and planned to distribute throughout the country via wholesale traders arriving at the Economic Centre.
The stocks are to be produced before Dambulla Magistrate and legal action to be taken against the trader.
