Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that teachers will not be enrolled to National Colleges of Education (NIEs) henceforth for a three-year diploma but to a University that will be formed with a four-year degree programme.
The Minister brought this into view while joining a programme to provide guidance to the principals on the advancement of education standards in the North-Western province yesterday (July 11) at the Sudesha theater in Chilaw.
Accordingly, Minister Premajayantha highlighted that the 19 NIEs that are currently in force will be remodeled into one teacher training university where graduate teachers will be brought out.
Its faculties will be overseen by the Ministry of Education with the authorization of the University Grants Commission, Minister Premajayantha further underlined.
He specifically emphasized that the trainee teachers of this university will not be permitted to set up trade associations in any way, similar to other state-owned universities as an act in response to producing disciplined graduates.
