Environmental rights activists staged a protest today (May 18) in front of the Ministry of Justice demanding proper legal action against those responsible for the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster.
“The vessel was carrying towers of plastic granules plus, chemical containers and the dispersal of these materials has caused significant environmental concern and threat to marine life. As green activists we eye true litigation over X-Press Pearl sinking,” expressed Ven. Rahula Thero, a human rights defender and an active member of Centre for Environmental and Nature Studies.
Nearly 30 people were gathered in this protest.
The X-Press Pearl, a Singaporean-flagged container cargo vessel, caught fire approximately 9.5 nautical miles from Colombo harbor on May 20, 2021.
The Government and activists currently debate what should be the correct course of action to demand compensation.
Sri Lankan authorities have already filed a compensation case against X-Press Pearl in a Singapore court, the President's Media Division (PMD) said.
