Cabinet has approved a proposal to hire retired public officials on a contract basis as well as attach officers currently serving in the government service to the Department of Emigration and Immigration in a bid to expedite the issuing of passports.
Cabinet approval was granted to the proposal by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
The retired officials will be rehired on a contract basis with the concurrence of the Public Service Commission.
The Cabinet proposal said that the procurement process has already started to supply 1,100,000 empty passports with “P” category chips from the supplier. Plans are also in place to issue 4000 passports per day by a 24- hour monitoring mechanism of the operations of the Department of Emigration and Immigration to eliminate the delay in issuing passports.
