A group of 41 Sri Lankans who were deported by Australian authorities after being detained while trying to enter the country illegally arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (9).
The group arrived via a charter flight from Christmas Island, where they had been held since being detained while trying to saild to Australia illegally on multi-day fishing trawlers.
Most of those in the group were from Jaffna and Valaichchenai. Three officers from the Australian High Commission were on hand to receive the group at the BIA. A large group of Australian security personnel too arrived on the flight with the illegal immigrants.
The Sri Lankans were handed over by Australian authorities to Immigration Officers at the BIA. They were then transferred to the custody of officers from the State Intelligence Service (SIS) who then handed the group over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further action.
The group is due to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate's Court after obtaining their statements.
