State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal handed over his letter of resignation as National List MP.
The letter was handed over to Secretary General of Parliament.
The Chairman of the Election Commission is to be informed of the vacancy who in turn will inform the SLPP to fill the vacancy.
Mr Cabraal, after handing over his resignation, told journalists that he expects to assume duties on Wednesday (15).
He said in other countries including China the post of Governor is highly recognised and he expects that his post too will be given cabinet status.
