Controlled prices imposed on white and brown sugar have been removed by the Consumer Affairs Authority.
In a gazette extraordinary, Chairman of CAA, Shantha Niriella announced the revoking of the previous gazette issued on November 3 with maximum retail prices of sugar.
The price of a kilogram of white sugar was to be sold for Rs.275 (unpacked) and Rs.295 for packed ones.
The controlled price for brown sugar was Rs.330 per kg (unpacked) and Rs.350 for sugar in packets.
Since imposing controlled prices, the CAA continued raiding warehouses and shops hoarding sugar.
State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya this week said 19,000 MT of sugar has been imported to the country and traders are creating an artificial shortage by not releasing stocks to the market.
