Atul Khare, United Nations Under Secretary-General, Department of Operational Support and Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen expressed appreciation for the rapid recovery of Sri Lanka's economy under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Foreign Minister Momen meanwhile, noted that Sri Lanka had paid off not only the loan given by Bangladesh but had also paid the interest, complimenting the President and his government.
Mr Khare and Mr Momen made the comments when they met Rohitha Bogollagama, Special Representative/Special Envoy of the President of Sri Lanka who arrived in Accra, Ghana yesterday (4) to take part in the 2023 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial.
The government said Mr Bogollagama had a productive discussion with the two dignitaries.
The discussion was friendly and helpful in terms of presenting Sri Lanka’s position in international peacekeeping operations and its potential and capabilities. Under Secretary-General Khare was extremely appreciative of the commitment and professionalism of the Sri Lankan military forces and police in the UN peacekeeping missions in Mali and South Sudan in particular.
The Minister of Bangladesh too acknowledged the contribution made by the Sri Lanka troops in the past in the peacekeeping operations.
Meanwhile, Finance Ministry sources said the government is working hard towards paying off its other loans and had plans to completely pay off more loans next years.
