Doctors among several unions on strike on Wednesday

News

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) are among several sectors joining the 24-hour strike tomorrow (February 08.)

The strike which commences  from 8.00 am tomorrow will continue  until 8.00 am on Thursday at all, except some selected  hospitals across the country

GMOA’s Media Secretary, Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said that through this trade union action, the association intends to defy the government’s new income tax hike, malpractices happening in between, and turning a blind eye towards the shortage of medicines in the country.

“We intend to raise our voice with strong trade union movements which will continue to gear up and if the Government fails to address our issues and give heed to our solutions”, Dr. Wijesinghe further affirmed.

He further asserted that professional trade unions in health services would be joined by the Bankers, Engineers, and sections of Sri Lanka Administrative Services in their strike against the inequitable tax policy of the Government.

Government’s Dental Surgeons Association (GDSA) has concurrently declared a 24-hour token strike the same day February 08 on the side of over 40 professional trade unions in the Professionals’ Trade Union Alliance (PTUA) at Hyde Park in protest of the new Inland Revenue Act.

Members are requested to abstain from routine duties and private practices. Despite that, essential services including functions at children’s hospitals, maternity hospitals, military hospitals and the cancer hospital will not be disrupted and all necessary steps have been taken to uphold emergencies.

Among the other sectors affected would be the Ports Authority and the transport sector.

However, the Sri Lanka Air Traffic Controller’s Association has informed that the smooth functioning of aircraft movements will not be affected on Wednesday.
