The waste recycling plant of INSEE Eco Cycle plant located inside the Katunayaka Free Trade Zone caught fire early this morning.
It is learnt that this plant's chemical waste storage plants had caught fire and toxic fumes from the fire had affected at least 40 employees of a nearby factory. These workers have been hospitalised.
The recycling plant takes industrial waste to be used for core processing at their cement kilns in Puttalam. However, it is learnt that since this plant is not a very labour intensive facility there had been no one inside it at the time of the fire.
According to a statement by INSEE, a fire that broke out in the wee hours of the morning of February 3 at a building owned by INSEE Ecocycle at the Katunayake Free Trade Zone has been brought under control.
The fire was quickly and efficiently brought under control with the immediate help and support of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Navy, Katunayake FTZ Fire Brigade and the Fire Service Department of Colombo, with the leadership of the Disaster Management Centre. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, INSEE said in a statement. (SD)
