MP Sarath Fonseka said today he would contest for the presidency as an independent candidate and launched a scathing attack on the leadership of the SJB.
Making a special address to the media, Field Marshal Fonseka said he has resigned as the Chairman of the SJB as well as its Kelaniya organiser.
He said that he had made many sacrifices to build up the SJB but he had lost respect for the party due to the behaviour of its party leader.
“The first time I observed the SJP leaders’ behaviour was during the aragalaya when he was invited to form the government. About 15 of us insisted that he should take over but he refused saying he did not have a majority in the House,” he said.
He said some of the economic experts with the SJB leader had said it was too dangerous to take over at the time of turmoil.
Fonseka said the next time Parliament was electing a president,he along with others in the party wanted the SJB leader to contest. “For three weeks we had discussions and even till the last minute we were told he would contest but he backed out and told Dulles Alahapperuma to contest,” he said.
He also accused the SJB leader of engaging in corruption at the highest level. “Those who are spending money for him are the same casino mudalalis and others who were once backing the SLPP,”Fonseka alleged.
