Former Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof. Athula Senaratne and his family members have been assaulted by a group of university students last night following an argument over a traffic accident, Police said.
Prof Senaratne and his son are receiving treatment at hospital while the professor’s wife and another inmate too were injured while equipment in the house has been damaged.
More than 300 students had surrounded the house and some of them stormed the house.
Students claimed that the professor’s son’s car caused damage to a parked motor cycle.
The students had first entered into an argument with the son and later surrounded the house.
Prof Senaratne continues to serve in the University as a senior professor.
Police said that investigations are underway and the persons involved in the assault incident will be arrested.
