Four murders on New Year’s day: Police

News

Four persons were killed in separate incidents on New Year’s day, mostly due to revival of old rivalries, Police said.

A 45 year old man was shot dead by a former Army officer in the Seeduwa area following a long standing dispute.

The ex-army officer was arrested. He had used a pistol for the shooting.

In Medagama a 47 year old man was hacked to death with a sharp weapon. The suspect was also injured in the incident and has been arrested.

Police said the incident had been sparked off following a long standing dispute.

In Eravur a 38 year old person was killed and the suspect had fled the area.

In a separate incident in Ahungalla a man travelling on a motor cycle was shot and injured. He succumbed to his injuries later at hospital.

The man was riding the bike with two children. The two children were also injured in the shooting incident.

The victim was employed in guarding multi-day trawlers.

Police suspect that a rivalry over distribution of narcotics led to the shooting.
