Manewa, Gangewadiya, Eluwankulama and Galnewa have been designated as Sensitive Ecological Zones, the Environment Ministry said.
Manewa and Galnewa in North Central province, Gangewadiya and Eluwankulama in North Western province were identified as sensitive ecosystems by the Ministry’s biodiversity unit.
Secretary to the Ministry, Dr. Anil Jasinghe said previously there were reports of damage to these systems during the implementation of development projects due to non-designation of such ecological zones.
However, under the new arrangement, the Ministry of Environment will identify those sensitive ecological zones and take steps to conserve them, so no individual or institution will be allowed by law to destroy those ecological zones.
He said four areas will be protected under the National Environment Act and their safety is guaranteed.
“Therefore, the Biodiversity Unit has prepared a programme to identify such sensitive ecosystems and implement a plan to conserve them throughout the island”, Dr. Jasinghe said.
