A fresh motion has been filed before the Supreme Court, seeking the court's intervention to fast-track the hearing of the petition filed earlier to suspend upcoming local government elections ahead of postal voting next week.
Postal voting for upcoming local government elections is scheduled to be held on February 22, 23 and 24.
Earlier the petition was filed by Army Colonel (Retired), W.M.R.Wijesundara urging the Court's directive to suspend the polls considering the economic crisis situation the country is facing and unable to source adequate funds for election expenditure.
When the case was taken up last week, the Election Commission informed the Court it has taken all necessary steps to conduct the polls as planed as it is mandated to do so under the country's Constitution.
Chairman of the Election Commission, Nimal G. Punchihewa and other members of the commission, the Prime Minister, the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and the Attorney General have been named as the respondents of the relevant petition.
