The Cabinet has decided to permit a research project to study the impact caused by use of chemical fertilizer consisting of Nitrogen in parts of Sri Lanka.
The international Nitrogen Management systems (INMS) joined with the United nations Envronmental Programme( UNEP) have planned to implement a multipurpose research in south Asia region regarding the use of fertilizer with Nitrogen.
Therefore the researchers have proposed to carry out the programme in selected cultivation fields in Nuwaraeliya, Kalpitiya and Anuradhapura.
The project also aims to educate the farmers on identification of atmospheric pollution based on diversity of vegetation in highland forest areas. The project also aims to educate farmers and stakeholders to reduce the nitrogen damage by management systems during a five year period.
Therefore, Education Minister G.L Peiris has proposed to the cabinet to grant approval to enter into a partnership agreement among the University of Peradeniya, United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) institute, Global Challenges Research fund and the South Asian Nitrogen Hub (SANH).
