Dollar-starved Sri Lanka is to promote biking for employees as an alternate transportation for work saving fuel and reducing environmental pollution, a senior cabinet minister has proposed.
Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has prepared a cabinet memorandum to encourage public and private sector employees to ride a bicycle to work reducing the dependence on crude oil and the carbon foot print.
He said that Ministries and state institutions could extend its support towards environmental conservation and reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
A cycling strategy will be launched by Ministry with further measures to transform cycling and walking to deliver the government’s vision to double cycling and increase walking by 2025, he disclosed.
E-scooter trials will also be brought forward soon after the dollar situation improves to help encourage more people off public transport and onto environmental friendly-alternatives. (Bandula)
