Husband and wife among six dead in three fatal accidents

Six persons have died in three separate fatal accidents in Bakamoona, Naula and Dambulla. 

Police Media Unit stated that the driver of a car traveling along the Naula-Elahera Road had lost control of the vehicle at Alikanda last night, which resulted in the car veering off the road and striking a sign post before falling onto the nearby Yodha Ela. The driver of the car and a female passenger suffered serious injuries in the accident and subsquently succumbed to their injuries. Another woman who was injured was admitted to the Bakamoona Hospital before being transferred to the Dambulla Hospital for further treatment. 

Police believe the driver was a resident of Katugastota while the deceased and injured females are a mother and daughter from Nawalapitiya. However, no documents have been found in the possession of the victims to establish their identities. Efforts are currently underway to recover the vehicle, police added. Bakamoona Police are investigating. 

In another accident that took place at Angunawelpelessa along the Bakamoona-Dambulla Road, a jeep had crashed into a Kumbuk tree last evening after the driver had lost control of the vehicle. The driver and a passenger in the front seat of the jeep suffered serious injuries in the crash and succumbed on admission to the Dambulla Hospital. The deceased were identified as two males aged 71 and 74 years resident in Bakamoona and Avissawella. Dambulla Police are investigating. 

A third accident that took place in the early hours of this morning (11), where two lorries had collided at Moragahakanda.  The accident occurred along the Naula-Bakamoona Road when a small lorry had collided with the back of another lorry traveling in the same direction. Five persons who were in the small lorry - the driver, a small child, two other males and a female suffered severe injuries in the accident and were rushed to the Bakamoona Hospital, where one of the males and the female had succumbed to their injuries. 

The deceased were husband and wife from Hingurakgoda. The male was 47 years of age while the female was 41 years of age. 

Police said initial investigations have revealed that the victims had been returning home from a funeral. The driver of the other lorry involved in the accident had fled the scene afterwards along with his vehicle and investigations are ongoing to arrest him.
