Senior journalist and media freedom activist Seetha Ranjanee passed away in Anuradhapura today, February 16, 2025.
She had been battling cancer for many years and was 70 at the time of her passing.
Ms Ranjanee started her career at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
She contributed to a range of publications, including Lankadeepa, Dinamina, Desathiya, and Ravaya, as well as several other well-known magazines.
As a founding member of the newspaper Yukthiya, she achieved significant milestones in her career.
Beyond journalism, she was a committed activist, tirelessly advocating for media freedom and journalists' rights. She was a pioneering member of the Free Media Movement and served for many years as a convenor of the organization.
Her remains will be placed at the residence No.430/4, Madagammana Road, Katukeliyawa, Anuradhapura, for the public to pay their last respects.
Her cremation will take place in the evening of Tuesday, 18 February, at Katukeliyawa Public Cemetery in Anuradhapura.
