The University of Sri Jayawardenepura will close temporarily from 6 p.m. today (12) following an altercation between two student groups.
Students are therefore required to vacate the campus by evening.
A clash reportedly erupted between students of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) from the Management Faculty and students of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) from the Arts Faculty.
The incident is believed to have been triggered by an attempt to disrupt an art festival scheduled to take place at the university.
In response, the university administration instructed all students to vacate the premises by 6 p.m. today.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pathmalal M. Mange said that to prevent further escalation and ensure student safety, the university was closed, and the holiday initially planned for next week was granted starting from today.
The date of reopening will be announced once the situation stabilizes, likely after the Presidential Election.
