Thirty-two Sri Lankan women who had been employed in Kuwait and had been deported for having violated Kuwaiti laws arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning.
The women had fled contracted places of employment and had been working in other places. They had all registered with Sri Lanka's Embassy in Kuwait to volunatarily return home.
The returnees were mainly from Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Gampaha, Kinniya, Colombo, Kurunegala and Puttalam.
Officials said an estimated 30, 000 Sri Lankans in Kuwait have fled their contracted places of employment and were now working in other areas without valid visas.
A spokesman of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait said that according to Kuwaiti immigration authorities, about 84, 000 Sri Lankans had arrived in Kuwait from January this year up until the first week of May looking for work.
