Met Dept warns of an increase of heat in five provinces today

The Meteorology Department warned that the heat index, the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to increase up to ‘Caution level’ in five provinces including the Western Province today. 

The temperature increase could be felt also  in the  Northern, North-central, North-western,  and Southern provinces and the Ratnapura district.

The Meteorology Department issued an Amber warning. The heat index recorded 39 to 45 levels which is considered as a caution level. 

When the temperature reaches caution level fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and continuing activity could result in heat cramps.

The heat index forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and heat condition that is felt on the body. ( therefore the heat index does not forecast maximum Temperature) the Department had prepared the heat index by using global numerical weather prediction model data. 

Department advised the general public to Stay hydrated at work sites, as well as instructed to have breaks in the shade as often as possible. 

The Department warned the public not to leave children unattended inside vehicles. Limit strenuous outdoor activities and stay in a shaded area and stay hydrated. 

The department also predicted that few showers would occur  in Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Ratnapura districts today.

According to them showers could be expected during the evening or night.

Apart from that, mainly dry weather is expected  over the island. 

Cold weather can be expected in the Northern and North-central provinces and Trincomalee district during the early morning hours .  

Misty conditions can be experienced at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-central provinces and in Badulla district during the morning.
