Area residents in Munkilaru, Udayarakattu, Mullativu staged a black armband protest last evening (20) demanding justice over the killing of a 12-year-old girl.
There has been heightened tension in the area since a post-mortem inquiry into the death of the victim, 12-year-old Yogarasa Nidarshana, revealed that she had been pregnant and had bled to death from severe cut injuries when someone tried to remove the fetus in her womb.
Villagers wearing black armbands marched from Munkilaru village to Udayarakattu Vidyalayam and demanded that steps be taken to bring those responsible for the child's death to justice.
Puthukkudiyiruppu Police, which is conducting investigations into the incident, has already arrested one suspect and have identified several others allegedly involved in the incident.
The victim's mother had reported her missing to police on December 15 but a search operation along with area residents to find her failed. Her body was recovered from shrub land located about 200 metres from her home on December 18.
