The Sri Lanka Navy and the Police Narcotics Bureau launched a special operation, and seized a local multi-day fishing trawler, on suspicion of smuggling narcotics, on the high seas about 400 nautical miles (740km) south of Sri Lanka, arresting six fishermen in the process.
The trawler, which was seized at the international maritime boundary, was brought to the Galle Harbour on Friday (June 14). A search of the boat by the Navy revealed that the trawler contained about 150kgs of heroin wrapped in 130 packets which were attempted to be smuggled.
The street value of the drugs are estimated to be more than 1.3 billion rupees.
The narcotics were sealed with fibre in a suspicious manner in the front of the boat.
The suspects had left to sea from the Point of Dondra on 15 May.
