Nine fishermen involved in illegal fishing were arrested at several places in the Northern Sea off Jaffna, the Navy said today (June 1).
In investigations conducted by the Northern Naval Command officials, 110 sea urchins and boats with illegal diving equipment were discovered in Veththalakeni, Chundikulam, Chalai and Nagar Kovil yesterday.
The fishermen involved, who are residents of Mullaitivu, Mullivaikkal, Mannar and Kalpitiya aged between 18 and 52 were arrested and their five boats and engines were seized.
The Navy has handed the suspects over to the Jaffna Fishery Inspection Office.
