Nine people were injured in a shooting carried out by a security guard during what police said was an attempted robbery at a storage facility near the Colombo Port last night.
Police said the storage facility comes under the expressway that is being constructed through the Colombo Port. A group of persons had tried to force their way into the storage facility to rob property inside it when they had been confronted by the security guards at the facility.
The group had thereafter tried to assault the security guards and grab their firearms, at which point they had opened fire. Five men and four women were injured in the incident and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. One woman has already been treated and discharged, police said.
The injured males are between the ages of 18 and 43 while the females are aged between 34 and 62 years of age. All are residents of Bloemendal.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
