The Petroleum Products (Special Provisions) Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament this evening with a majority of 60 votes.
The bill received 77 votes in favour and just 17 against.
Several amendments were introduced to the bill at the Committee Stage debate of the bill.
The bill provides for the importation, supply and distribution of fuel to parties other than the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and the Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC).
Taking to Twitter after the bill was passed, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said that the bill "will allow global suppliers to enter as retail operators, eliminate CPC monopoly on Jet Fuel & liberalize energy sector."
