President’s office defends appointment of committee to study Easter Sunday attack commission report

The President’s office today defended the move to appoint another committee to look into the findings of the Presidential Commission of inquiry into the Easter Sunday attacks.

A statement from the President’s office said that one of the task of the six-member ministerial committee is to look into the overall measures to be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The task of the committee would be to study the recommendations in depth and report on measures to be taken to ensure peace, security and stability lasting for a long period.

However, the statement pointed out that the committee will not include new recommendations to the commission report and they would not intervene in filing action against those as recommended by the commission.

The President’s office also defended the selection of the members to the committee saying their political experience was taken into consideration.

The statement came in the wake of comments made by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and opposition MPs who have been questioning the educational qualifications of the members appointed.
