The cabinet has approved a proposal to declare 23,746 hectare as an elephant management reserve in the Hambantota district.
The land is being declared as a reserve as a solution to the elephant-human conflict.
A protest campaign has been continuing in the area demanding that the gazette notification be issued as soon as possible.
Co-cabinet spokesman Dr Ramesh Pathirana said that since cabinet approval has now been granted the gazette notification could be expected next week.
