A collective of railway trade unions warned that they would call for a strong union action tomorow if Railway authorities fail to take measures to improve services.
Collective of Railway Trade unions for improving railway services ( Dumriya Nagasitaweema Sandaha Wurthiya samithi)”, have written to the president, Prime Minister, transport minister as well as General Manager of railways they would carry out an island wide strike with participation of railway engine drivers if their 12 demands are not met.
They demanded that the railway authorities should not cancel trains and cause inconvenience to daily commuters. They also called Railways to use first class compartments in special trains which stopped due to transport ministry intervention ( the program done with the intervention of tourism ministry targeted to earn five million revenue per trip)
Some of their other demands were to provide necessary promotions to officials directly involved in train operations and reduce the amount of vacancies and to stop recruiting employees under contract basis.
