United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Range Bandara has defended his stance for calling for a postponement of the Presidential elections and Parliamentary elections by two years.
Mr Range Bandara today addressing a press conference at the party Headquarters Sirikotha said that he was only explaining a provision provided in the Constitution.
‘I have not made any statement against democracy,’ he said.
Reading out provisions from the Constitution, he said that it was clear that a referendum could be called for on a national issue, as decided upon by the President.
He said he made his original statement considering that Sri Lanka now needs to prepare to pay up its debt while obtaining further loans for development.
He said parties may against his views, but he was appealing to other parties to assist in continuing with the ongoing development projects.
