Ranjan contests elections despite risk of rejection
Veteran actor and politician Ranjan Ramanayake will contest the upcoming general election from the Gampaha District under the United Democratic Voice (UDV – Eksath Prajathanthrawadi Hada) party which has been revived after nearly 20 years.
This party was originally formed in 2005 and received official registration in 2022.
Mr. Ramanayake addressing a press conference said, he was advised by two President's counsels that he can submit his nominations despite the previous conviction on him where he received a partial Presidential pardon.
He said, according to their advice, he can submit his nomination for the upcoming election, and the Election Commission of Sri Lanka cannot reject it.
He acknowledged the risk that he might not be able to sit in Parliament even if he is elected, but he is working to resolve the issue with the guidance of his lawyers.
Mr Ramanayake emphasized that today is a highly significant date for him, as it coincides with the birthday of his uncle and his role model, the late famous actor and politician Mr.Vijaya Kumaranathunga ,marking the launch of this new party.
The UDV will use the microphone as its symbol in the upcoming election. Mr. Ranjan Ramanayake noted that his past experiences, including his time in prison due to his speeches made with a microphone, have shaped his new political journey.
He stated that starting this journey under the microphone symbol is both significant and remarkable. Being unbound by family ties, he is committed to dedicating his life to serving the people of this country.
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Thilakarathne Dilshan, has been appointed as the national organizer for the new political party led by Mr Ramanayake. In addition, former Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Vadivel Suresh was present at the event to launch the new party.
He expressed his intention to involve individuals from the film industry as candidates, believing that they possess the qualities and efficiency to serve the country effectively.
