The remains of former Archbishop of Colombo Rev. Dr Oswald Gomis were laid to rest this evening at St Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena.
The funeral service was conducted by Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and Apostolic Nuncio is Archbishop Brian Udaigwe.
All bishops and a large number of priest and nuns were present for the funeral service.
Rev Dr Gomis passed away on Friday. His remains was placed at St Ann’s Church, Piliapitiya until noon Saturday before being taken to St Joseph’s Cathedral Anuradhapura.
The remains placed at St Lucia’s Cathedral, Kotahena on Sunday followed by the funeral service on Monday evening.
He was ordained in 1958 at St Lucia’s Cathedral. He served as Auxiliary Bishop of from 1968 to 1996 and Bishop of Anuradhapura from 1996 until being installed as Archbishop of Colombo in 2002. He retired in 2009.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
