The Wattala Police Crime Division has arrested the suspect involved in the incident of stealing a lot of gold jewellery, including necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings, worth more than 55 lakh rupees after breaking into a house in Avariwatta, Cardinal Cooray Mawatha, belonging to the Wattala Police area.
During the questioning of a person who behaved suspiciously near the Wattala-Hendala Super Market, the police were able to find a gold necklace in his possession for sale.
Later, the suspect was arrested, and during further questioning, he confessed that the theft was committed at midnight on August 5th and that he had buried the rest of the gold stock behind his house on Galwatiya Road, Wattala.
Then, according to the direction of the suspect, the rest of the gold ornaments were recovered and taken into custody. It has been discovered that the suspect is a drug addict and has committed similar thefts before.
The concerned suspect and the stock of gold jewellery are scheduled to be presented to the Wattala Magistrate's Court today, August 11, in the afternoon.
As per the instructions of the OIC of Wattala Police Station, Chief Inspector Anura Gunawardena, OIC of Criminal Investigation Division, Chief Inspector Taraka Wijesinghe, Deputy Police Inspector Pramoda, Police Sergeant Dasanayake (71335), Police Constables Ranaweera (94046), Dilshan (103397), and intelligence unit Dilshan (103490) are conducting further investigations.
